Welcome back to school, Penguin Class. We are very excited about the summer term. Our whole school topic is 'Grab your Passports.' In Y2, we have decided to grab our passports to the past, so our learning for this half term will be focussed around 'The Great Fire of London.' We have lots of exciting learning planned.
Our Literacy and History lessons will be closely linked this half term. We shall find out how the Great Fire of London started, why it spread and how it was put out before writing newspaper reports about the events. After our newspaper reports, we shall read the story of 'Toby and the Great Fire of London' and start writing our own stories.
In Maths, we shall be focusing on statistics. We will be learning how to create tally charts and pictograms to show data that we have collected. We will then answer questions about the tally charts and pictograms and begin to explain what they show. In addition to this, we shall be learning our 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x table. You can practise your times table facts using Times Table Rockstars or Hit the Button.
We are very lucky to be able to continue with our percussion lessons with a special Music teacher this half term. The children will get the chance to play different instruments and perform songs altogether.
In Science, we will be learning all about plants. We will find out what plants need to survive by completing different experiments, where we try and grow plants in different conditions. We will also learn about some of the food that we eat and how it grows.
In RE, we will be focussing on different stories from the bible, including The Good Samaritan and Adam and Eve. We will think about what these stories teach us about making choices.
We will be keeping active each day during Y2. We take part in many Go Noodle activities during the day and we will also continue learning how to skip. Since September, the children have each had their own skipping rope and have the chance to practise their technique each day. They have all really improved since September! In our PE lessons each Thursday, we will learn how to play tennis.
Maths homework will be sent home each Friday. This should be returned on the following Wednesday. Spelling homework will be set on Spelling Shed. Please help your child to log in to their account to practise their spellings. There is also a sheet of homework challenges that can be completed at any time before May half term (see below.) Please send in any photographs of the creations that your children have made to firstname.lastname@example.org .
If you have any questions, we will be available to talk at the end of each school day.
