A warm welcome back to the new school year! We are so excited to have you all back in school and we have so much fun learning planned. It is going to seem very strange coming back into school after lockdown, but I can assure you that we will have a great year!
I am fairly new to the St George's family and I am excited to start my journey with Otter Class. The classroom is all ready to go and there are so many areas within it for you to expand your learning further.
For our first week in school, we will be settling in to new routines and getting used to being back in school after lockdown. We will learn how to use our environment safely and we will spend lots of time learning outside, so wrap up warm!
Our topic this term is 'Lights, Camera, Action!' and we are going to start by focussing on traditional tales. In Science, alongside all other areas of the curriculum, we will be utilising our wonderful outdoor areas to learn about the natural world and we will be observing how the seasons change over a period of time. As we will be outside a lot of the time, please always make sure you have a jumper and a coat- a spare pair of socks would also be a great idea in case your feet get wet! In History, we will be looking at how things have changed over time, this will link to technology as we will look at how cameras have changed in recent years. Our Cultural Day is USA and we will be finding out where that is on the map to see just how far away it is from the UK.
We are going to explore many stories together and we will learn these through Drama activities and lots of story telling. I wonder which characters we will meet along the way... In writing, we will be working on pencil control, making sure that we can hold a pencil comfortably and correctly so that we can start to write full sentences. To make the muscles stronger in our hands, we will be doing lots of 'Funky Finger' activities and this will help us to hold the pencil correctly so that we can continue being wonderful writers.
In Maths, we will be following the White Rose Maths curriculum, developing number recognition and representing numbers. Maths will be very practical, so we will use lots of resources to help us really deepen our understanding of numbers.
Our PE days this half term will be Monday and Friday. However, because of the new uniform (black joggers and black trainers) you do not need to bring a PE kit into school- this also means that we can get outside to do PE more times in the week without worrying about having kit in school.
I love to read, it can take our imagination to so many exciting places and as a class, we will be reading lots of stories together in school. It would be really great if you could read your reading book everyday at home too! Reading a story with your grown ups or siblings at home is great fun and I can't wait to hear about what stories you like to read.
In Reception, homework will be a topic sheet for the half term with different activities on to complete at home. When completed, you can post a picture of your work on Tapestry so that we can see what wonderful things you have been doing. For Year One, you will have a homework book and you will also get a half termly activity sheet. Similar to above, you can email a picture of your super work to school, or print a picture of it and stick it into your homework book. Alongside this, you will a get a piece of Maths and Literacy/Phonics work set each Friday. This should be completed in your homework book. Please return your reading book and homework book on a Wednesday- for those of you who return it every week there will be a reward for being a Homework Hero!
If any parents or carers need to see myself or Mrs McBroom, we are available either at the end of the day or you can contact the office to make an appointment.
The start of this school year may feel strange and things may look a little different, but one thing that is the same is the St George's love of learning and I am really looking forward to starting a new school year with you all.
Love Miss Cassell and Mrs McBroom
