Year 6 - Giraffes

Happy New Year!

We hope that you have had a fabulous Christmas and are all ready for the excellent term ahead! Our topic this term is 'Adventures.'  We will be exploring maps to learn about different countries and discover the Wonders of the World.  Within our topic we will be considering our school driver which is 'The Natural World.' As a class we will look at the Natural Wonders of the World and think about the importance of looking after our planet and animals.

During Literacy we are going to create our own documentary about a wild animal from another country.  We will use a range of technology to perform our documentaries.  Look out David Attenborough!  We will also be writing stories of adventure.

As we are considering the natural world this term we will be making a visit to the waste centre in Lincoln to learn how our rubbish is disposed of.  More information of this is to follow shortly.

PE this term will be on a Monday afternoon, we will be indoors doing gymnastics and dance, please ensure that all children have their kits in school each week.

We are getting closer to our SATs and this is a very important term.  Please support your children with their work at home. Children will receive Maths homework on a Monday and spellings on a Friday.

If you have any questions,as always, feel free to come and speak to us,

Welcome back!  We hope that you have had a fabulous summer and are ready for the new term.

Our whole school topic this term is Green; we will be covering a range of mini topics within this throughout the term including the Vikings and Aliens!

Giraffes will be kicking off September with a very exciting residential trip to York.  We have some super activities planned including: a visit to the Jorvik centre to learn all about the Vikings, a trip to the Castle museum where we will discover the truths about Dick Turpin, visiting the York Minster, making Viking Shields, stained glass windows, following a Viking myth trail and much more!  Please remember to pack lots of clothes that you do not mind getting dirty and sensible footwear as we will be walking into the city.

In Literacy we will be following our Viking topic to write our own mythical story based on Beowulf, we will be learning the story using talk for writing which allows the children to memorise the structure of the story through using actions.  We will also be writing newspaper reports about a Viking who appears to be in the wrong time period!  Spellings will be handed out on a Friday ready for a spelling test the following Friday.

In Maths we will be focusing on place value and the four operations, children will receive Maths homework on a Monday and it will be due in the following Monday,  Please support your children with their homework.
