Welcome back and a very Happy New Year to you all!
I'm very excited to be joining Zebra class this term - it was lovely to spend some time in the class before Christmas and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone even better now! I will be teaching the class every morning and one afternoon; Mrs Davidson and Mr Anderson will teach the rest of the afternoons.
Our whole school topic this spring is Adventures and we are going to be going on lots of adventures through our learning as well as developing our school focus on 3 main areas - the Natural World, Healthy Body and Healthy Mind, and Reach for the Stars!
In English, we are going to be reading 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' and using this to inspire our descriptive writing about settings. We will also be using 'The Tunnel' by Anthony Browne to write our own adventure stories about people who have been transported into different worlds through magical portals - I wonder if you can think of any other stories like this? Spellings will be sent home on a Friday and tested on the following Friday. We also encourage you to read at least 3 times a week at home - we are going to be having a whole school focus on reading so I have collected lots of exciting books for us to read and share!
In maths, we are going to start with multiplication and division, where we will develop our mental calculations and written multiplication strategies. We will also be learning to calculate area and to develop our understanding of fractions. As we agreed before Christmas, we are also going to work hard to become the best class in the school at Times Tables Rockstars!! Learning times tables continues to be the main focus of our maths homework this term - any written homework will be sent home on Mondays and is due back by the following Monday.
In our topic work we are going to focus on the adventures experienced by explorers through history right up to the present day all around the world. We will be researching the lives and expeditions of different explorers and adventurers and investigating the reasons why they explored and the results of these explorations - how have they changed the world we live in today? We will be also investigating geography of settlements - why and how settlements develop in different places - and key geographical features like rivers and mountains. We will incorporate other subjects such as DT and art into our topic learning.
In science, we will be learning about changing states and solids, liquids and gases and developing our investigative skills. Our focus in RE is Christianity and the beliefs held by the Christian community. Our whole school Christian value this term is Respect.
PE will be on a Tuesday every week with a focus on games, primarily hockey. We will be outside whenever possible so PE kits should include trainers please. We are NOT swimming this term.
Two very exciting things that are happening during this spring term are 2 super exciting visits - firstly, we are going to the National Space Centre in February to learn about the space adventures of people such as Tim Peake; then at the end of March it is our fantastic Year 3/4 residential at Rand Farm Park! Letters about both visits will be coming home early on this term.
There is so much fantastic learning planned for this term - we can't wait to get started!
If you have any questions or concerns, please do come and see me at the end of the day or contact the school office to make an appointment.
Mrs Steers and I can't wait to see you all!
Love Mrs Vaux

We will be looking at all the features of a non-chronological reports and then have a go at writing our own. We will then be moving on to persuasive writing. The children will have the chance to write about a current, pressing topic about deforestation.
In Maths, we will be looking at addition and subtraction. We will be building on our knowledge from last year and moving on to look at thousands too. We will also be learning about area and perimeter and continuing to extend on our knowledge of multiplication and division from last year.
Our topic this term is Rainforests, we will be looking at where they are located in the world and what amazing life can be found within them. As well as learning about their impressive size and interesting layers, we will also be looking at current environmental issues relating to these fascinating areas of the World.
